Absolutely - the key to having any control on moving water (in a kayak) is to try to be moving faster than the flow - although it’s vectors you are creating because you can’t outmuscle the overall current. In this case whitewater kayaking is quite different to rafting, although there are times you need to take that approach in a raft too.
They are hanging from ropes or wires suspended across the river. The posts hang just above the water surface
