It was probably a butter crock, or French butter dish. They are great, until the room gets too warm. There’s a company Butter Bell which makes some pretty nice looking crocks without having to dig through thrift stores. I had to stop using ours because any sustained weather over about 70 makes it useless because the butter falls out into the water.
