Dear internet-
THIS is a good prank. It’s harmless. No one gets stressed out. It’s funny when you realize what’s going on.
What’s NOT a good prank:
- Telling your friend whose dog you’re babysitting that the pooch is dead, then showing them it isn’t
- Terrorizing strangers over minor slights and threatening assault
- Anything that will send your kids to years of therapy, and possibly make them hate you
Technically, “parenting” is not a prank.
The funniest thing about the Home Depot prank is that they actually found someone who works there to play it on.
being a parent on the other hand…Awww, won’t it be cute to have little versions of you and your SO running around? Psych! poop! Sleep deprivation! Gripping existential anxiety and near-constant self-doubt!
But what about the rival magicians who spend their careers and fortunes obsessing over how it’s done??
(E.T.A.:Video contains several spoilers. Also, David Bowie did a great job playing Nikola Tesla in that movie.)
These are good, but get samey pretty fast:
- Where is X?
Comes back immediately with X.
I’d like to see one involving changing clothes in a clothing store, or maybe eating a meal in a restaurant super quick, or walking a dog that changes into a different dog as soon as the guy walks behind a tree, or…
ETA: Of course, that last one doesn’t need twins. D’oh! Just leave dog two hidden behind the tree and swap leads as you walk by.
Funny thing is, it’s been shown that you don’t need to be twins, or look that much alike, to pull off this prank. Half of the time people won’t even register that the person they were just helping has suddenly changed.
“In total honesty, I told him if he didn’t agree to do the part, I had no idea where I would go from there. I would say I begged him.”
A great movie with twin boys playing pranks is Robert Mulligan’s ‘The Other’ (1972). The film starts off so idyllic, but slowly devolves into truly deep horror. Brilliant story from Tom Tryon. Film was horribly overlooked because 1972 was crammed with good films.
I like this version better:
THAT is good use of twins!
Personally, I’d have tried to get Ron Mael for the role.
A bit over the top, but still…
