A stump is usually short, a trunk is taller. Usually, a stump has roots in the ground and is where the tree used to be. A trunk can be upright and attached to the roots like a stump, but it need not be - it can be uprooted and lying on the ground, and it might have rolled, washed, or been moved somewhere far from where the tree grew.
