Watch this quick-acting bus driver save a student from "almost-certain tragedy"

They did (and you can see footage below); but apparently:

here in New York State, you can only be taken in for passing a bus if an officer sees it first-hand

Well, I certainly hope they don’t let slip the driver’s address so people could just slash their tires constantly. That would be uncalled for.

Indeed. Showing a close-up of the license plate and noting the make, model, and colour of the car, on the other hand, isn’t quite doxxing in this case, and you’d get the same result.

This arsehole would be wise to just cop to doing it, say there was no excuse, and accept whatever punishment was doled out. But being an arsehole, he or she will roll the dice that staying silent will result in not getting caught.

Naw, it’s Norwich. Very rural area. That’s the shoulder.

That seems like some hot garbage…

If you play the news video, they specifically say the car driver “passed on the shoulder” and they show the road clearly.

How many parents here immediately recognized that deep sigh she gave as soon as the boy was off the bus safely?

Yeah… I advise not holding your breath waiting for that politician to show up.

we need more female bus drivers:

obvi the car’s driver is an asshole for speeding past a bus, in the shoulder.

but why didn’t the bus driver pull over to the shoulder before stopping and opening the door?

That’s not what school buses are supposed to do. If the bus pulls over to the shoulder:

  • It makes it more likely that cars will pass on the other side (also illegal);
  • It gives the kid less room to navigate (the doors open outward);
  • It’s dropping the kid into an area more likely to contain broken glass, rusty nails, and other garbage.

Why didn’t the driver pull all the way over before letting the kid out?

Exactly. I’d add that the car should stop regardless of where the bus is to prevent situations where a kid runs in front of or behind the bus to cross the street while its lights are still flashing and gets hit by a car passing on the left. Sure, kids should wait until traffic is clear but they’re kids.

Asked and answered the two posts above. That’s not how it works.

The kid didn’t even acknowledge the bus driver.
“Thanks for saving my life”

Would have been perfectly safe to pull in a little further to ensure this crazy maneuver would have been impossible.

That is the legal requirement. If there is no center barricade such as a concrete median strip, ALL lanes of traffic in both directions must stop and stay stopped while the bus’s lights and signs are deployed. If there is a barricade, then only the vehicles traveling the same direction as the bus, no matter how many lanes, must stop.

Many school buses are dropping off kids in rural areas where there are no street lights, stop signs, sidewalks, etc. The kids don’t have a fighting chance unless every driver follows the law.

You pull to the right, then they pass on the left.

You don’t pass on either side, of a school bus, period. And you don’t drive on the shoulder except for emergencies.

Yeah, I think it’s important to remember (especially for the “Pull over” gallery) kids live on both sides of the street and will often cross the street in front of the bus to get to their house. The bus and that sacred flip-out sign and lights are their protection. If anything, the bus should jacknife across both lanes with the driver popping up out of the sunroof to menace any idiots thinking shaving minutes off their commute is worth it.
