Watch: uncensored clip of Will Smith hitting Chris Rock in the face at the Academy Awards

EXPLAINING. is. not. ENDORSEMENT. FFS. I don’t think those words can be ANY CLEARER.

They were up for best actor?

Rock told a horribly offensive joke, and Smith had every right to be angry. Smith did not have any right whatsoever to strike Rock.

A person can believe both of the above sentences simultaneously. I believe that most of the people on this thread do believe both sentences simultaneously. It feels to me like most of the arguments here are just somebody emphasizing sentence one and getting responses to the effect of “So you think Smith was right to strike Rock?” or somebody emphasizing sentence two and getting responses to the effect of “So you think what Rock said is okay?”

The two statements do not contradict or even detract from each other. Drawing attention to Rock’s offensive joke does not in any way justify what Smith did. Drawing attention to what Smith did does not in any way lessen the offensiveness of Rock’s joke.

The whole point of the film was to highlight them. He knew that. Will Smith almost deserves a slap from them for pulling focus, throwing a tantrum and embarrassing himself. That could’ve been the best night of his life. He’ll probably never get that stain out.

How’s that working for Mel Gibson? Louis CK? Kevin Spacey? It’s almost like there’s some kind of bleach they’ve used…or whitewash…

Seems none of them are as well liked as they were. And they surely know it.

The POINT of the award is the honor the actor… I don’t understand how that’s difficult to understand. :woman_shrugging:

Again, if I was responding directly to you I would have replied directly to you. However your stance is pretty absolutist in a way I can’t agree with fully, and the broad sweeping of all individual conflicts into the 4 societal definitions kinds of violence just doesn’t work. This is a failure of two very rich groups entirely insulated from consequence of their actions and free from being forced to change course not willingly de-escalating a conflict until it reached physical confrontation - the literal well established and understood course of events of conflicts between groups of people that has hundreds if not thousands of studies and even finely detailed documents on the types of mediation at which stage should be used in the conflict to avoid this. Most people that reach this stage don’t have the financial resources to get the mediation, but they have so many resources that no one can force them into mediation - unlike me if it was someone I was working with regularly.

Even using that idea of violence, Chris rock was being equally violent for making continued targeted jokes as a form of abuse towards Jada Pinkett Smith. That would be an equal use of that concept of the 4 type of violence being applied in the situation.

also find it hard to believe that the same white audiences who consume violence against Black people on screen to an almost fetishistic degree (and are quite happy to have the Academy reward these gratuitously violent projects year after year) are so distraught about an open-palm slap. Again, this kind of performative pearl-clutching is only ever reserved for Black men who mess up.

Thanks for this! Here’s Michael Harriot’s take on it:

This hardball excerpted from the article.

In 1973, Western star John Wayne had to be restrained by six security guards when he tried to rush the stage and attack the Native American actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather. Littlefeather was on stage to accept the best actor award on behalf of Marlon Brando, who was boycotting the awards in protest of Hollywood’s depictions of Native Americans.

Wayne got to keep his awards after the incident, but pending their review, Smith could very well have his historic best actor win revoked. Mind you, this is the same academy that gave Roman Polanski an award in absentia after he pled guilty to a charge of unlawful sex with a minor and then fled the country before he could be sentenced. The double standard is glaring.

Hey, I just learned on our local Facebook group that Will Smith and Chris Rock faked the whole thing to distract the entire country to take the heat of Biden for threatening Putin.

I’m never going to get tinfoil again, it’s all been made into hats.

Continuing on in this endless parade:

Sounds like they asked him to leave and he refused. And so they’re going to probably suspend or expel him and potentially “other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct” which sure sounds to me like they’re going to take the oscar away.

Reminder that Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein, and Woody Allen all have their oscars… So, if you’re Black and you slap someone for insulting your wife, you’re out, but if you rape a woman of any age, you’re gold!!!

I hate this timeline.

Oh, and this is the grammys…

Just give everything to Jon Baptiste, as he’s awesome…

I haven’t seen the academy talking about revoking his award or anyone’s award, I heard expulsion or suspension.

But these people have been tossed out.

Harvey Weinstein, Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby, Carmine Caridi and cinematographer Adam Kimmel.

I second that emotion.

So a man slapping another man is the same as rape. Got it.
