Same sort of things happen with garden slugs, though I don’t recommend salting the earth to get rid of them.

My grandfather used this method to remove leaches from a s kids after we’d swim in the lake.

Then he’d use the corpses for fishing in the evening. Good times. Good times.

My father was an ace at removing leeches using a zippo lighter. He never managed to burn any attached kiddos!

Diatomaceous earth is what I always see recommended for slugs. It has a similarly horrifying action of eviscerating the slug’s tender skin when it crawls across it.

While hiking we were given a stinky mixture of tobacco juice and salt to keep ‘em from attaching. Coat your shoes and socks and they don’t come…

I was coached so I didn’t panic; found one on my ankle, got it off and there was a bit of blood but barely any sensation…
