'We have failed' — Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf admits failure on coronavirus 'herd immunity' strategy as COVID deaths multiply

Unfortunately “being an island” is a strategy most countries can’t pursue at short notice.

Trust me. Been giving notice for a very long time. Still hasn’t happened.

It’s not like it worked for us :face_with_thermometer::uk::fire:

Well it’s only the prerequisite for the NZ strategy to work. In addition to that you also need decisive action, clear communication and the will to help your country even if it may backfire politically. *glances at Tories*

But my point was that if you aren’t an island in the first place these policies alone aren’t going to be enough.

Border control isn’t perfect, even when surrounded by water. Many other countries could have sealed their borders to the extent New Zealand and Australia have.

Canada might be a good example.

There are a few Anders Tegnell tattoos going around:

He also argues that there’s no real evidence that face masks work

For sure- I think the firm border closure has done a lot of prevent spread from the US. As a Canadian trapped in the US because of it, it has been a wee bit inconvenient for me, but I understand it and think it was the right move, given the dumpster fire that is America. When the ship is depressurizing, you bring that airlock door down, even if there’s still a few poor souls on the other side.

It hasn’t been talked about much here, but Canada’s approach to hard quarantine at the border is a good model that seems to be working pretty well. Most people are surprised to hear that the RCMP is enforcing it with inspections, etc, but that’s what it takes to do this.

The comments were initially taken as a criticism of Sweden’s controversial anti-lockdown strategy, but the royal court later said the king was referring “to the whole of Sweden and the whole society. He is showing empathy for all those affected.”

I’m not saying that as a veterinarian, I have decided that there’s one bottle of ivermectin in the fridge that is “reserved”… but there’s a bottle in the fridge that’s part of the “emergency only” supplies.

We’re all vegetarians at our house; our dog’s the one who gets HeartGard Plus 1x/month. Emergency use only covers a lot of… ground… agreed.

There’s a ranch supply down the street that sells ivermectin for ranch cattle, goats, horses etc. by the quart bottle. Pretty sure they don’t even ask you what you’re using it for when you buy it. Welcome to Texas.

As I’m not a human doctor, I have to tell you that human ivermectin and the animal preparations are completely different things, and that the labeling for the veterinary products clearly states “not for use in humans” and “not for use in animals intended for human consumption”…

That being said, my wife (an emergency critical care specialist) has decided on the equine apple formulation (for her pet horse of course…).

Copy. Roger that.

I seem to recall that “herd immunity” results from massive immunizations, not do-nothing negligence. Did Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s state epidemiologist, miss out on that?

To be fair, Tegnell has repeatedly asserted that he wasn’t driving towards HI. I’m not super clear on what his goal actually was though.

Stick the national head in the sand and wish COVID would go away? I think we have another example of what doesn’t work.

Not true - see comment above, Sweden has a slightly higher urban bias than the US.

Being an island was the least important part of the NZ government’s strategy.

I’m sorry but you can’t tell me that they would have worked in a central European country with 5 to 8 land borders.
