What happens if Trump loses the election but refuses to leave office

I used to think as many voters as possible should vote by mail, to lessen health risks.

Now, after reading polls that show a large majority of Democrats plan to vote by mail while a large majority of Republicans plan to vote in person, I think that folks who aren’t in an all-vote-by-mail state should vote physically if they can do so, if they or their household members are not in a high-risk category of severe reaction to the virus.

I am certain the Republicans are pushing for a 5-4 Presidential election, like Bush vs. Gore. The more quickly Biden votes can be counted, the harder that will be for them.

The main danger is in swing states with Republican secretaries of state, governors, and/or legislatures who will try to invalidate as many mail-in ballots as they can and cut off mail-in ballot counts as early as they can.

I do not understand why people fear this happening.

If he loses, he loses. It does not matter if it is 1 electoral college vote or 100. Come January the new president is sworn in and the secret service and Marine Corps will remove Nostradumbass by force.

Thank you for giving me good-dream fodder.

Of course, he orders his SS go into the hazards when it’s his balls on the line.

Because he cheats and steals like breathing?

The problem isn’t one oompaloompa, it’s the fanatical hordes following him. If he’s not beaten soundly into the ground they will try to defend against what they see as an insurrection.

He also stated out loud that his mental health had failed. I mean, we are aware, as it is quite obvious from his actions, but who says that and thinks to retain credibility?

Holy projection, Batman! This incompetent fool just spilled the beans on what 45 thinks he can order the Secret Service to do on Jan. 20, 2021. Here’s hoping they hate him as much as the top brass at the Pentagon!

I never thought V would become timely, in a non-metaphoric fashion anyway.

It is irrelevant how he loses. @anon48584343 's point is total truth…he will lie cheat and steal in any degree or form. Again…no matter how much he loses by he will cry foul and his base will support his cries.

None of which is relevant to the position and transfer of power for the office of POTUS. The swearing in will happen…his base can kick and scream all they like. The secret service and marine corps assigned to the WH will remove him at the behest of the new POTUS. They service the office of the president, not the person them-self.

This article is fear-mongering bullshit. Please stop echoing this kind of thing.

If you want to worry about something, worry about Mass-Murdering Traitor Trump suppressing the vote in various ways. That’s definitely happening right now.

Has Trump said or done something recently that indicated to you he was willing and able to accept the results of the election should they go against him? Has he said or done something in the last four years to indicate that he considers it a priority to preserve our democratic institutions as we know them?

I see it less as fear mongering, but as a roadmap that trump has surely had his evil team of lawyers or Putin’s own evil team of analysts look into.

Articles like these inform the public on all the possibilities. Fear is up to you.

Vote.

Agreed

This is probably true for half of them, but the difference is between having a handful of lone wolf loonies that the FBI can round up fairly easily vs full on carnage in the streets.

Yes? We know? They are trying to set up a scenario where he can refuse to step down, by suppressing the vote on one hand and claiming voter fraud on the other. Their GOAL actually does matter here.

Trump didn’t expect to win in 2016. He fully expected to lose and then spend the ensuing years bitching about it and monetizing that “injustice.”

But now he has more to lose. He probably doesn’t even want to be president anymore, but he also knows he will be prosecuted for all kinds of corruption and abuses of power once out of office and no longer able to pull strings at the Justice Dept. Even with a humongous overwhelming loss he will delay and obfuscate, and probably spend that time covering up, destroying documents, wiping hard drives. We’ve already seen his cronies pushing violent insurrection under the reverse logic of “trying to STOP a Democrat coup”, so we can expect there will be violence no matter what happens.

I picture the Secret Service using a crowbar to open the bathroom door and dragging him out.

Considering how Trump has alienated Military leadership, I rather doubt he could count on them preserving him in office given a clear cut loss.

Yes, exactly, we don’t even necessarily have to get rid of the electoral college, to begin with anyway.

It would make a huge difference if we simply mandated that electors vote according to their state’s popular vote, and give electoral votes to both candidates based proportionally upon the popular vote.

My state had ~1.2 million votes for Trump and ~600k votes for Clinton in 2016, and all eight the electoral votes went for Trump. Over 600k people should not feel their votes were thrown in the toilet. I think part of the voter apathy in red states owes a great deal to this.

I keep an eye on their predictions, but there are several states on the blue side of the snake graph within the error range, or close. It’s hard for me to see that and still have confidence in the optimism of their overall prediction. I hope they are right.
