What porn stars want you to know

I disagree. I think it speaks to the racist “those big bad black people are coming to steal our white women away” narrative, their feelings of fear and hopelessness, and the power fantasy that can be evoked by watching this. There’s a reason “cuck” is used by an insult for those on the far right – and it’s alluding to a very specific (non-dictionary) definition of that term.

I think our viewpoints compliment rather than contradict one another.

That takes me back to the Joanna Angel quote I brought up from earlier in thread, that if something is produced by a misogynist culture, of course it will be misogynist. But, of course, you can push against culture from within culture (otherwise things wouldn’t have ever changed, and obviously Angel agrees otherwise she wouldn’t be making porn). I’m sure porn is a medium for positive change for some creators and viewers. It’s pretty easy to get hung up on how awful the majority of it is, but it’s worthwhile to remember that the majority of pretty much everything is pretty damn awful.

I’ve been a fan of Suicide Girls since its inception for this reason. And even though I’m ‘vanilla’ (aberrantly so, according to Dan Savage), I appreciate porn production studios like Kink that ethically and transparently work with material and themes that traditionally have been used to perpetuate a misogynistic and otherwise abusive culture towards women as well as distorted notions of consent.

Porn that celebrates diversity in a way that doesn’t ‘fetishize’ outliers and minorities but simply presents them as essential bands on the gamut of human sexuality and the human body—that is a lodestar, for sure. I think that’s the main reason why I love (and mentioned) the film Shortbus. Everyone—straight, gay, bi, queer, trans, skinny, fat, young, old, white, brown, whatever—is collectively portrayed as a mosaic of what it means to be a sexual being.

Apologies for that, BTW; careless typing and autofill. I do realise that you’re not the same person, I promise…

Busby Berkeley! Derp! I didn’t even spell it right…

Point still stands of the influence of Busby Berkeley on Bollywood, I think:

Arguments that the industry is just giving the customer what they want are as stale and weak as arguments for pink and blue toy aisles in toy stores. It’s lazy, retrograde capitalism. Goll, if not for Social Justice reasons, at least innovate your layouts and offerings so that you have something novel to offer the field you’re in. push things, make choices. The cistomer* may be right about their current tastes and preferences, but you’re the professionals, the creators, contribute!

* welp, that typo is too precious to edit…

Exactly. Everyone has tastes that are mostly fed to them as they mature, or they stumble across them. Very few have cultivated certain tastes of their own accord.
