@ 2:40 is a very important point. The niche element of pornography needs to be killed. Kill it with fire. Also, introduce performers of color who are more than a shade or two darker than pink, white people.

Color should mean color, not strictly hue or tint.

This reminds me of the arguments deployed against non-stereotyped actors of color in mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, namely the fallacy that the only audience is straight white men who only want to see themselves represented in the spotlight.

ETA: One issue I didn’t see raised in the video directly is that while there’s absolutely no reason why porn needs to objectify women, most straight porn does just that by mostly ignoring the woman’s perspective, thoughts, emotions and desires save as the most simplistic stereotype of mindless horniness. Men, for their part, are generally presented as sex crazed maniacs. This is, I think, why amateur porn has become so popular; it presents a more honest depiction of sexuality than the vast majority of so-called mainstream porn.

Indeed. Not least of all because niches are, for the most part, defined in a way to reinforce privileged white cisgendered heterosexual orthodoxy. It’s literally a tool of marginalization not only of sex workers, but of non-SWM sexuality itself within the wider culture.

I’m all ears… and eyes!

Strictly speaking they’re all pink on the inside. :joy:

If you close your eyes, their voices are almost indistinguishable. Jiz Lee has the least vocal fry, Stoya has the most; but they all have the same regional accent. Did they all grow up together?

Well I suppose if there’s porn you personally don’t like, it needs to be killed.

You misunderstand @knoxblox’s and my point. It’s the way porn is categorized and presented that reinforces foolish stereotypes. A lot of porn is frankly racist, and porn that isn’t stereotypically white is ghettoized. In other words it’s the lack of diversity that’s the problem. And yes, there really is a lack of diversity. Catering to a few thousand fetishes isn’t the same as diverse representation.

As was pointed out, it’s a way to reduce the humanity of the performer. Which ain’t right.
These are real human beings with even more problems than most of us, due to the stigma of the business.
My pet issue is freedom of expression, but nobody is free to express if they are not respected as fully human first.

Some, and I largely agree. But one good thing about reporting like this which actually listens to sex workers is it helps dismantle the image anti-sex-work activists tireless try to paint of victims who don’t know what’s best for themselves. I agree though, the porn industry treats it’s workers especially bad because the stigma facilitates society’s willful disregard of their personal agency.

Whilst I agree that porn does not represent multicultural equality and that’s a shame… aren’t we all missing the point? Porn doesn’t even represent reality! Woman don’t behave like pornstars in real life, well at least most of em I have known  and the whole world of human beens is a banging away non-stop. I think that ppls who are outspoken about the racist/stereotypical portrayal of porn need to consider that the nature of porn is driven by what gets you hot, the most liked videos, the most played clips and all driven by the global community tastes and desires. That seems pretty democratic and fair to me.

That’s what they said about POC leading men and women in big budget movies too. In reality it was a product of a hidebound industry controlled by old racists unwilling to get with the times. The idea that the market will magically give society whatever it wants ignores two important points. Some industries are artificially limited whether by practical exigencies and law, and they tend toward control by an oligopoly of concentrated capital and influence.

For those who like to read transcripts rather than watch video (though I encourage you to watch this one, just this once), here’s one of the standout quotes (the one @knoxblox refers to):

[Nikki Darling] There is a very stark difference in the way that white female performers get fetishized. Even just looking online and looking on Pornhub and seeing how black women are marketed versus how white women are marketed. A white female performer’s like ‘sexy little teen gets the best dick of her life’ and then [chuckles] for a black woman it’s just ‘ghetto ass ho gets pounded by a cock’. […] Why is it necessary that in order for me to be sexualized that I have to be either brutalized or be put in a position where I am very clearly subservient?

Really? you make this sound far more complicated and contrived than I believe it is. If you go look at any porn site, the content is rated by popularity and served up to the masses based on what they are searching for. If the majority of searches and therefore content is not culturaly diverse and focuses on certain representations such as blonde/bigboobs etc. then thats a direct reflection of the users desires. As long as the content is driven in such a way, the users are the ones who control the content not some old racists who own the industry - how would this be possible?

That sounds like the old capitalist argument that the free market must be supplying what the punters want because that’s how a free market works.

People have different tastes in porn. I mean it’s like food, you don’t say “oh you’re not being diverse enough if you don’t like fried penguin meat”
And yes race sometimes plays a part. Some like it, some it’s not a turn on, and some don’t care. Some like Cop Porn, Firefighter porn, teacher porn, mormon porn. etc…etc. add bondge to that matrix and you have a lot of porn choices for a search engine to filter to serve up “Gay Cop Bondage interracial Mormon Porn” Maybe it’s just straight porn that has the problem the story speaks of, but you can usually search for lots of very specific porn for gay porn.

I wonder where such massive bias comes from?

Well surely it’s just blockbusters…

Oh.

In a followup video, the actresses complain that they aren’t given the good scripts.
Apparently, there’s a hierarchy and all the good scripts go to non-porn actresses.

Try bing.com. They know they can’t compete with Google or DuckDuckGo for mainstream searches, so…
