What porn stars want you to know

… don’t they all look very bored though?! To be frank, I’d be bored. One can only eat so many strawberries, so to speak.

If the on screen porn workforce was truly “diverse” and representative of the population at large, there would be many fewer roles for young, slender, conventionally attractive people of the type in this video, and some of them might have to find a different way to earn a living.

I once saw someone ask a porn director (I’m pretty sure it was Joanna Angel) if she thought porn was misogynist. She said that porn is a product of culture, and we live in a misogynist culture.

I thought it summed up the problem nicely.

I’m pretty sure there is lots of porn featuring fat women, women over 60, and various other categories that people fetishize. I’d certainly be interested in the experiences of those women, I have to think they probably have some similarities with women of colour.

Would you define any sexual attraction to other than young/slender/conventionally attractive as a “fetish”?

The black woman in the video is saying what amounts to “there are not enough ‘girl next door’ roles in commercial porn for young, slender, conventionally attractive women of my skin color”. That may well be true, but it’s a pretty darn narrow concept of “diversity”.

No, but I think most of the industry does, and I took that as the problem that is being pointed to here - that non-pale skin is treated as a fetish.

I don’t usually like to criticize people by saying, “You are trying to address a problem, but you aren’t trying to address all the problems at once.” I have no idea how sensitive these women are to issues surrounding body type, age, or any other category. I don’t think their message is exacerbating the diversity problems unrelated to race.

And further complicating this, despite (for example) racially diverse facial features, you could line up most actresses in the business today and there would only be a few shades difference in complexion. It’s fetishizing an almost non-existent feature.

Nor do I. All we do know is that she is sensitive to the issue that affects her personally.

But with porn, I suppose, there’s always a niche that needs to be filled.

Actually, red. Per Clive Barker, we are all books of blood. When we are opened up, we’re red.

I don’t get why the term ‘porn star’ seems to indicate ‘women’ to most people. Outside of Stormy Daniels, I cannot name a single one. On the other hand I can name LOTS of male porn stars. I dunno. Straight porn just seems weird to me.

Read this again:

A white female performer’s like ‘sexy little teen gets the best dick of her life’ and then [chuckles] for a black woman it’s just ‘ghetto ass ho gets pounded by a cock’ […] Why is it necessary that in order for me to be sexualized that I have to be either brutalized or be put in a position where I am very clearly subservient?

These are her actual words. How does this ‘amount to’ what you claim she meant to communicate?

With names like that it’s no wonder they got into the porn industry.

Easy answer: some people only hear what they want to hear.

And a straight woman who has no problem with porn as masturbatory fantasy, Nikki Darling is right; “girl next door” tags almost always equate to slender, young looking White chicks, whereas Black female porn stars are often tagged as ‘hoes’ and by other misogynoir terms.

Regarding the former category, I did find this story (SFW photo-wise, NSFW word-wise) which also discusses porn as a medium for positive social change.

…it’s apparent that the goal of this film is to educate people not only on sex, but also on communication and positive body image. When I first arrived, [adult film actor and director] drake was interviewing couples about the adjectives they do and do not like used to describe their bodies.

“I love plush,” Red says, smiling, sitting next to her partner for the day, Dick Chibbles. But other stars disagreed, saying they can’t stand the term. The candid interviews, which featured real-life couples along with porn star pairings, highlighted the difference in each person’s preferences and the essentiality of communication for couples.

Yeah, i guess I agree with that statement. It does seem to me that on-line porn is driven by the users taste and how many views of each category/type of porn. I guess if there were more diverse categories then this may lead to more diverse porn workers and a more multicultural spectrum. However, as the sex workers say, anyone with a smartphone can upload their own POV porn etc, so there is nothing stopping any sort of diversity, I expect that these uploads either stay for a while or get dropped off based on their popularity since it’s a money making business. My point is that it seems like a fairly open and democratic system with the content driven by popularity. If the market was NOT supplying what the punters want, then I am sure another website would pop-up to cater for that market. Interesting situation.

But that in turn is driven by something larger: white supremacist patriarchy. And a way to change that is by purposefully increasing representations of diversity.

But how is it driven by something larger? Can you explain by what mechanism or what entity is driving white supremacist patriarchal influence over on-line porn? There is heaps of porn out there: black/white/asian/indian etc. etc. its all hugely popular and being uploaded by large groups of users and porn producers all the time?

Sadly, from what i can tell the common theme of this porn is not white supremacy but degradation/exploitation of women and girls and totally fake/unrealistic male chauvinistic fantasy.
