If anyone enjoyed 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows, I urge you to check out the new TV series. Quick 1/2 hour episodes, with all of the same wit as the movie.

The first episodes recycle some of the humor for those who missed the first boat, but there is some really good material that comes with the new cast, especially Colin Robinson, who isn’t your standard vampire.
Folks might also recognize Matt Berry from the IT Crowd, who continues in another representation of misogyny, vampire-style. Guest stars include Siobahn Fallon Hogan, and SNL’s Vanessa Bayer who was part of a very funny storyline.

Similar style of humor to What We Do in the Shadows, but with aliens rather than vampires

Ken Hall was so good in this. Everybody else was good too.

If Wyatt Cenac is part of it, I’m definitely in.

Years and Years

I didn’t know much about this going in but it’s great so far - vibrant, bold, funny, snappy dialogue… check it out. It feels very russell t davies even though he wrote just the one episode so i’m not sure how big an involvement he had in its creation.

Just finished watching the excellent Arrival again on the tele-box and one of the themes of the film, the idea of how we can ever hope to communicate with an alien species when we can’t even communicate with each other, has never felt more apt.

It’s fab.

Just finished it, thought it was great. My only complaint is that the children were under written. The same was true of the book and I was hoping the show would give them a little more depth.

After some thought, came back to strike most of that comment. Good Omens isn’t Stand By Me or Stranger Things, it isn’t about the kids, it’s about Crowley and Aziraphale. Or possibly just Crowley.

I get that. I tend to agree.

I thought the book did just fine with the Them. I suspect it’s a question of how much writing one thinks they need. For me, Pterry and Neil did a fine job of evoking the (to me at least) common fictional/social construct of the ‘gang of plucky kids’.

It’s the Famous Five, Dennis the Menace and the rest of the Beano crew all wrapped up in one.

No real characterisation needed beyond that but they get it nevertheless in all the various games they’re shown playing and their other interactions.

Sure, they’re all a bit stereotyped but then that’s kind of Adam’s thing. Just like the way Tadfield has perfect weather for the time of year and a perfect patch of woods for playing in. It also has a gang of kids for Adam to play with and a rival gang to playfight with.

I thought their casting at least was spot on.

Black mirror [season 5]

I’ve enjoyed them, particularly striking vipers and smithereens, but they’ve felt a bit underwhelming. Black mirror has had some really inventive things to say but the targets this time around felt a bit obvious i guess, the performances have been top notch though.

Can you “thumbs down” it? That should tune their recommendation engine.
