Why didn't bidets catch on in the United States?

And there was me thinking it was the 'Butthole water-broom" moniker that did for it.

Big fan of electric bidet seats here. And… people you are stupid if you don’t have one of these but you do have computers, smart phones, big TV’s, etc. all just depreciating and costing you every month in fees. As gadgets go, a low end Swash or Washlet seat is a no brainer at <$300 and will last for 5-10 years.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU CLEAN WITH DRY PAPER?
You are savages.
Just get one.
You’re welcome.

Yes. Where I live you have both the bidet that is the same size as the toilet bowl and the hand version and there’s literally a soap holder near every one of them.

That people only use water seems like they do not know the cultural habits of the places where they are commonplace.

Also: bidets are house fixtures, people wipe with paper at malls and businesses basically because people are assholes and extremely disgusting when using public bathrooms and you would end up with broken and feces covered fixtures.

That’s why original bidets are installed with soap holders. And after cleaning it with soap people wash their hands.

Edit: for those not in the know, one handle for cold water, middle for reach and strength of water, other for warm water. Like the French intended.

Different types of bidets for different purposes. As others have pointed out, euro-style bidets are designed to straddle and essentially shower underneath (complete with soap). Washlet-style bidets are designed as an improvement on toilet paper, quickly & effectively rinsing you off – the TP for dabbing you dry afterwards, not scraping the poo off.

Imagine that, it’s like I never used one of those in my life… Daily… Since I was born

My Internet friend, there’s no way I’m not using soap, I’m a woman and this way lies yeast infections.

Sure! I think my point, earlier, was that squirting liquid soap up one’s hoo-hah at bidet-pressure (as a few people were suggesting) seemed like a bad idea. Bidets are still a weirdly foreign concept for most Americans. My comment wasn’t so much for you as a general acknowledgement that bidets are good, soap or no.

If memory serves, TP (or at least the industrial version) is an American invention. It’s kind of a given that other ways of cleaning one’s privates would be discouraged.

TP generates a lot more garbage than just rinsing with water, I think it’s an important discussion to have going forward, sustainability-wise.

Toilet paper is a Chinese invention, apparently:
