Mars Attacks! attempted to be post-heroic-action-film before anyone knew the trope needed to be mercilessly torn down and rebuilt. It was far too weird for some people, and far too subtle for most. If you watch the film imagining Tim Burton winking at you the whole time, maybe giggling a little, then it’s a work of art.
