One of the reasons Battlestar Galactica feels so much more visceral is they show all this kind of thing quite a bit. They have janitors. The crew spend a lot of time in the bathrooms and showers (as real people do). I don’t know why so much of sci-fi tries to erase and sanitize this part of the human experience. It’s central to everything we do. Most people can’t go more than a couple of hours at a time without needing a bathroom. Our world is full of them for this reason. Half our civic infrastructure is devoted to them. Yet traditional sci-fi pretends they don’t exist or aren’t necessary.
So they’re treating the viewing audience as if they (we) were homeless.
