Well, he has some pretty good movies.
Why?
He made some great movies years before any of the embarrassing stuff came out…
If anything, I feel sorry for the guy now…
Sorry, miss on The White Album… I’ve got no use for that.
But… I, I think Repulsion is a good movie.
Pffft… now Stranger Than Paradise…
I don’t know-maybe because the guy knows how to make a great movie - and I don’t care about his politics.
Honestly, isn’t the list of artists, writers and popular politicians who were/are awful people immensely long? It seems to go with the territory. There must be some point at which we separate the person from the work. Paintings by humongous assholes sell for millions, and no one seems to fret much.
What about centuries after their death? Is the personally reprehensible and hypocritical Thomas Jefferson unredeemable, even though he wrote some of the most beautiful words about freedom in our history? Should the Declaration of Independence be banned because of its author?
Oh I personally don’t care for them at all, it’s just an easy punch to land in this debate.
I agree with you completely. The hard problem is coming to an agreement on what constitutes the redemptive aspect of their production.
I haven’t seen anyone here calling for bans on anything.
Beyond that, the question of whether or not a given artist should be supported is a obviously a personal choice.
We’ve already discussed that you have rather… eclectic tastes in movies, remember?
‘Difficult’ was a selling point for you, IIRC…
We’ve seen calls elsewhere for boycotts of several of the artists mentioned in the thread. I’m not even sure I disagree with the idea in theory. Just seeing the slippery slope too.
Sure, I understand.
To me it’s kind of an odd line of conversation, because we make choices like this all the time, just without the added weight of calling it a “boycott” or basing it on an artist’s character.
I lolzd,a little.
Whoa on grouping Pee Wee with those other crimes…
Thank you for that little rabbit hole. I look forward to reading the paper i was able to find.
Then my work here is done.
Pretty much off topic, but I’ll chime in on Blade Runner just because I love it so much.
IF the versions you saw had narration in them, ignore them! They really do detract from the movie a great deal.
I suggest any version without narration if you want to give it another try sometime! (If you did see one of the “good” versions, great! Not everyone has to love Blade Runner.)
Which is a very good argument for us all remaining sober!
Seriously though, nothing takes the fun out of drinking like drunks.
