Similarly, Dutch has ‘rook’, smoke, and ‘ruiken’, to smell.
From what I can find the words are already considered to have been separate in Proto-Germanic, though they come from the same Proto-Indo-European root. It’s just a coincidence that in English they ended up being homonyms- also true to some extent in Dutch, the past tense of ruiken is rook.
