This reads like the beginning of a Berton Roueché tale. If you haven’t read Roueché–who was the New Yorker’s in-house epidemiology reporter for half a century–and you want to finish this story about the woman who traded a Michelin-starred meal for being the vector for a plague that killed 28% of the French population . . . you can’t do better than flipping though Roueche tales looking for a similar beginning.
