I think a first aid kit might be one of the most important things to take camping, while also being the thing a young guy might be most likely to overlook packing.

Well, good grief, you lot are just next level!
My nephew is gonna be so spoiled this Xmas.
Good work, team.

So, on the list:
Machete
Swiss Army Knife
Coffee kit
Kindling Cracker (wow)
Headlamps! (so obvs. Thanks)
Billhook
First Aid Kit
Wipes!
Handwarmer
Stove
Hat
Sousaphone.

That’s it. We’re goin’ campin’

I want to echo those mentioning the first aid kit. I know it’s not necessarily “fun,” as presents go, but having one can avoid a LOT of trouble. Oh, and make sure it includes cortisone or something for itchy bites and rashes.
Also, it wouldn’t really help with making kindling (we have twigs aplenty where we camp) but we have a cheaper version of one of these that’s lighter weight than a lot of the other blades mentioned re: firewood:

Nordic pocket saw

It came in a little camping kit in a tin that included the saw, a compass, a flint fire starter and some other useful stuff.
Another nice gift might be some fire starters. I made some last year and they made great gifts.

If you’re going with sharp things and a first aid kit, that kit should include at least one zipstich laceration kit.

I got one of these years ago. Still works fine. Clean burning woodfire stove that also charges your devices.

I’ve always wanted one of these. How are they for doing things like boiling water?

They are fantastic for cooking and boiling water, takes a little longer to start than a gas stove, but once it is going it will boil a litre of water in 2 mins.

…and then I followed the link and looked at the price.
I mean, he is my nephew, but he earns more than me,
so I’m sending him the link and buying him a bag of wipes.

A good compact water filtration system. Depending on how “wild” you are talking about, anything from a Life Straw to a Big Berkey. But water is heavy. And drinking unpurified water is dangerous.

Going to second (third?) The headlamp, first aid kit, and water filter. Those are things he is likely to need and to use up or lose.

The rocket stove does look awesome

Great suggestion! I have a Life Straw water bottle that works really well. I have a regular Life Straw as well. It’s awkward to use, but very helpful when I forget to bring water (which happens a lot).

Is it a lighter?

Ah!
Hip Flask!
Right?

That version is a little larger than the usual hip flask - 8 ounces.
