I’m glad to see continued research on the lasting effects of this manmade disaster. But I was disappointed to see in the linked article that BP is allowed to bid on offshore parcels once again.
…just this month the U.S. government lifted the ban it imposed on BP in 2010, which barred the company from bidding on government contracts. Within a week, BP participated in an auction for new Gulf oil-drilling leases, reportedly winning twenty-four bids, including some for areas near the Macondo well.
This criminally negligent company pushed its employees and contractors to cut corners in an inherently dangerous working environment with the result that 11 workers died in the easily-preventable explosion. The fact that BP’s leadership walks free today is an appalling indictment of our criminal justice system’s unfairness.
