It worked out so well (so far, knock on wood) that I am shocked the Democrats had anything to do with it.
That 18% of Republicans… Were they going to vote for Biden this November?
Is that an example of shrinkflation?
I thought 1 in 5 was 20%…
(Not that I’m especially mathy.)
As I’ve said before: Dark Brandon must feel like the smuggest man in D.C. Rarely does such a hard decision show such prompt consequences.
1 in 50 is a vanishingly small number, in the range where response errors are more important. It’s hard to get that much of a consensus.
I used to think that too, and then a very good friend who works in DC let me know that it was an open secret how much his attention and memory had started failing. We didn’t see it, but locals did. So I’m willing to believe that those pushing him were in fact doing him a kindness, ultimately.
The original report says 18% of Republicans.
That may be, but it also makes me wonder why this effort wasn’t done before he re-declared? Or was this just all a huge Batman gambit? (I don’t believe this is actually the case by the way.)
Same here. I think what got lost in some of the acrimony from this summer is that the people who were asking/pressuring him to step aside weren’t doing it for personal gain or for fun, they were doing it because they see Trump as an existential threat to our republic and didn’t think that President Biden was going to be able to see the campaign through to victory. I think Biden has been a fantastic President and he is a fundamentally decent man, but with the stakes being what they are, hurt feelings don’t really rate all that highly at the end of it all.
Like you, I heard a lot of second hand stories over the last year or so about people having serious concerns after meetings with Biden. For those people the debate was not a one-off occurrence.
There I go again, reacting on the basis of mere headlines.
How do we know it wasn’t? Big decisions often take some time to be made.
