10 killed in Dayton mass shooting

What, the Cops shot a white man?! Mahgawd! None of us are safe!

Right? When I heard that the shooter wasn’t taken alive, I automatically presumed it must be a person with a higher melanin content.

Seems that only outside news sources can clearly see and label what’s right in front of the faces of American ones:

That’s one thing my parents taught me early in life: if you want the most honest coverage of what’s going on in America, look to the overseas news outlets. And that was some 30+ years ago.

I wish they were alive now to commiserate with me in the existential horrors of the past few years.

It gets problematic, though. We’ve had all these mass shootings where the shooter has a racist/misogynist/homophobic ideology and then also a few where there’s no discernible reason at all for the attack. The first case is clearly terrorism - there’s an ideology and goals - but grouping them with instances of the second case allow some to deny that, to pretend they’re all of the second type. So calling them all terrorism muddies the waters and hides the clear cases of traditional, textbook terrorism whose ideologies we need to fight.

When the government becomes fascist, enemies of fascism become “terrorists.” It’s not (just) a distraction against right-wing terrorism that they’re ideologically connected to (and, in some cases, directly inspire).

I wonder how that works. In many of these cases (e.g. Gilroy), the shooter kills himself when the cops show up, so that explains why they didn’t take him alive. Otherwise it could be a purely tactical consideration - when the cops show up, he might be in the midst of shooting, they might not have cover, and so they might be forced to shoot him and his white privilege gains him no protection.

Thank whatever powers that be for other countries, and their own news coverage.

It wasn’t so very long ago that this was a very conservative position.

Video of Ronnie supporting assault weapons bans, background checks and waiting periods.

Ironically, that was also rooted in the same racism we’re experiencing with these mass shootings because a certain black protest group did so with assault rifles on their person. Hell, the NRA even helped write that law.

We need more Black Panthers.

REAL ones like Bobby Newton and Fred Hampton, not the fake handful of cowardly bigots that the right wing loved to hold up as a sign of “voter intimidation” a few years back.

Yeah - we weren’t to proud of them around here. Not upset either.

You mean the guys with the breakfast clubs for kids? Yeah, I can get with that.

(Yes, I know that The Black Panthers were about more than just that. But the right likes to reduce them to scary black people with guns. They were also working on building community in an environment where people didn’t give a shit of black and/or poor kids starved to death. Hmmm… I wonder what living in that kind of a society is like). Sarcasm, people. That last sentence is sarcasm.

Yup, those guys; the ones trying to help feed poor Black kids in their community, and who held free night lectures about civics and government, so that Black people would know their legal rights.

I know you’re hip to the history.

There’s a really, really good movie about the time when the Black Panthers went from the one to the other called Night Catches Us.

Yeah, I just wanted to cut off any other people who wanted to make false equivalencies.

What’s telling is that they were working to instil knowledge, not insular, in-group only ignorance.

I’ll have to look for it, but where I live the New BBP has no relevance or influence; they are just wannabes trying to ride the coat-tails of the old movement, before it was decimated by Hoover.

Riiiiiight. I’m so sure nobody would look into the ideology behind the attacks if a bunch of people swearing allegiance to ISIS or Antifa or Black Lives Matter started carrying out terrorist attacks on a near-daily basis.
