But, while I am guilty of this behaviour, it has tended to be because I have a lot of information and like to share it when I find an interested audience, not because I believe the audience to be “beneath” me on some level.

Your beliefs will rarely enter into the equation, unless your audience is telepathic.

Some of us have the good fortune to be able to judge the effect of our affect on people we interact with. It’s a gift, a blessing, not something earned.

Some of us are not so fortunate, and must roughly approximate with learned rules. Good parents, teachers, mentors are another blessing.
