2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

The NYT falls in line, as expected. The narrative that’s forming is “forget the plutocratic arrogance and racist policies and sexual harassment, he’s all about regulating Wall Street and gun control and preserving a woman’s right to choose. Just like Bernie!”

I am not surprised. Media companies are very happy about all the money that Bloomberg and Steyer are spending on them, and I am sure that they want to stay in the race for as long as possible. News organizations profit from big money politics.

If he decides to engage. Usually the debates are a way for a candidate to get better known, but Bloomie has taken an entirely different path to that. MB is an unimposing (=short) old guy with an unattractive voice and a tendency to the kind of snarky quick response that only works well in New York. The other candidates, especially Klobuchar, must be salivating at the chance to go after him on the stage. Everyone has been (rightly) indignant that the debate rules were change to accommodate him, but he might decide it is not in his best interest to debate at all.

(As might Trump in the fall, though it might be possible to goad him into it with accusations of cowardice.)

ETA: Slate had a ‘review’ of many of Bloomberg’s many many ads; the striking thing is how many of them, especially the ones the reviewer thought were most persuasive, did not feature Bloomie at all.

So what would make him a Democrat, then? Being a wannabe oligarch lackey instead of the real deal?

I have to confess there’s something about a POTUS who keeps quiet and doesn’t try to draw attention to himself.

I would separate the two policies. Taxing extreme wealth is a policy goal in and of itself. No need to tie it to M4A, because when M4A overperforms on saving money, there will be calls to reduce or eliminate the wealth tax.

Between this and the fiasco that was his “Plan for Black America” thing, it seems like Pete’s campaign has been developing a track record of overstating the degree to which black voices support him.

I think Bloomberg’s apology for stop and frisk does differentiate Bloomberg from Trump. Trump is a narcissist and Bloomberg is a Machiavellian.

I understand where you are coming from, and I still think that Bloomberg is probably better for America than Trump and would back the vote blue, no matter who movement.

But I’m pretty sure the biggest problem with America is that the political ssytem puts entitled assholes with an infinitude of misplaced self-confidence in charge of things. That these awful, dangerous people who should be strongly selected against are strongly selected for. The fact that they are the same in that regard is an extremely meaningful similarity.

My guess is that they use the word “evil” in a sort of almost supernatural way. Almost like they are saying, “This wasn’t the work of devils, it was the work of people.” At least I can’t figure out any other way to understand it in the sense that they are saying it.

That’s why Bloomberg is against social healthcare. Because if Bloomberg were running it, they’d hang you out to dry at 80.

I’m not entirely sold on this. I think Hitler was insane. The Kims of North Korean aren’t good at anything. I feel like somehow there is a relationship between being incompetent and successfully installing fascism. Like if you don’t believe that down is up you’ll never really know who will fall in line behind you.

I can’t disagree with this, but it is hardly a new problem. (Trump however is a new problem.) We have some candidates on the D side who seem to be much better (though anyone running for POTUS is full of hubris), hopefully in a few rounds one or two of them will be dominant.

Now that Bernie is polling so well that he literally can’t be ignored, NBC/WSJ have now moved on to “forgetting” that Warren is actually running.

And people that have better insurance from work can still argue for better coverage via employers paying for Medicare supplemental plans that cover more - get rid of deductibles etc which seniors buy right now.

Also - imagine how much unions could have gotten in pay raises and other benefits if they didn’t have to spend so long arguing for insurance?
