Since I’m not watching… did Uncle Joe fuck up his SMS mailing list pitch?
I’m glad someone is saying this out loud and in front of a large audience about Harris’s record as a prosecutor. She’s a hypocrite who abused prosecutorial powers.
Informative, well-balanced article (including great links) on Harris’s history: Kamala Harris’s criminal justice record, explained - Vox
As the article notes, her record in the Senate has been one of criminal justice reform. Regarding her recent marijuana decriminalization legislation,
Harris’s proposal goes one step further, however, imposing a 5 percent federal tax on the sale of marijuana that would be used, in part, to fund grant programs that help individuals who have been disproportionately penalized for marijuana possession in the past.
Even after her mixed record (and she did make some efforts at reform even as a prosecutor), she has made concrete efforts as a Senator to reform the system. Does her past career completely disqualify her from the presidency? I don’t think so. Even if the alternative is Trump? That would be crazy. I’m a Harris fan (and also a Warren fan), and I think some of the criticism of her record is completely legit (especially outside of soundbites) but a lot of it is not (e.g., the “she’s a cop and all cops are bastards” refrain).
And I do think politicians can change their minds for the better, like Obama on gay marriage. Not every politician had ideal positions on every issue 20 or 30 years ago, and given what we have to work with in our candidates, I think that would be too much to expect. Anyway, these are just my thoughts at the moment.
HERE IS A NEW SLOGAN FROM TIM RYAN! HE WANTS THAT SWEET SWEET QUIET TALKERS MONEY!
Obligatory:
Hmmm. I think I’d prefer “You don’t have to keep fellating rich white men.”
Which anyone who’s interested in justice reform knew. No one gets to be AG of a state with more people than Canada without protecting the carceral establishment of modern day American slavery. I’ve been looking for any signs that she’s repentant for her role in that system, but she seems proud of her record as a prosecutor.
The sense I get from the more privileged streak of left-center voters is that, if they think about it at all, they consider it a peripheral issue to be dealt with after the Trumpists are defeated, because every administration for the last fifty years has supported America’s Kafkaesque plantation system. Which is, well, not wrong. Harris isn’t exceptional in that regard. But of course part of how we got to be the world’s leading jailer by a comfortable margin is that it was always a peripheral issue and we always found some excuse to ignore it or pretend it could be fixed with Band-Aids.
It is what it is and Biden’s just as bad on incarceration while being worse on a number of other issues. But voters should at least primary with eyes open.
I’d tell him to fuck off if I could tell which of the various interchangeable mediocre white men he was
It makes sense if you assume that Tulsi is gunning to be the VP pick. (She has been attacking Harris on several issues – not just her prosecutorial record – for a while now; Harris seems to be her main target among the candidates.)
What an infant.
Re: his whining about Kennedy’s “we choose to go to the moon” speech… Delaney would have been the dipwad chastising JFK for proposing such a patently ludicrous “this decade” time table – the technology to get to the moon literally didn’t exist when he made that proposal.
Understatement! Biden is directly responsible for tripling the US prison population - Biden wrote the '94 crime bill.
Wow… a bottom polling Democratic candidate going on Fox News to complain about two of the top polling candidates who just handed him his ass. Bold strategy, Cotton.
I really hope that guy is officially weeded out by the third debate. Seriously, unless you have a big platform issue you’re trying to get into the agenda of a candidate with some potential, you’re really just a drag on everyone going on this long with it.
Someone’s considering running as and indepeendeeent. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprused if the entire cebter is planning an intentional 3rd party spoiler just to scare prpgressives into learning the “right” message from Trump
Beer & politics have a relation that goes way back, so why not.
Not sure she helped herself
From a purely political point of view, a governor with these kind of private sector credentials can be a formidable candidate, especially in the general election. Being governor (instead of senator) shows executive experience, and there are probably fewer political compromises in your record that can be dug up and used against you. A successful earlier career as a businessman instantly blocks many standard GOP electoral talking points.
Hickenlooper however is not the right guy for this. (Tom Wolf, the current governor of PA, would have been a much better candidate.)
