Pete Buttigieg is best known as the one human on the face of the planet who passed by Harvard Square every day and didn’t notice the homeless people.
Or, to summarise that article for the TLDR crowd:
Somehow I doubt that’ll happen.
Nobody will do it, though.
Can’t Bloomberg just put his media empire into a not-at-all blind trust nominally controlled by a close relative, profess complete ignorance of the day to day operations, and continue to enjoy all the perks of ownership?
Isn’t that how it’s done now?
Debate moderators should ask him about the slide rule club.
DAMN!
In a lot of ways.
(Gotta read the first one too, of course.)
“A mediocre white kid with mediocre intelligence and mediocre parents can easily make it in America,” I explained, blackly. “A smart black kid with smart parents and a supportive community still has to fight every day to hope to reach the levels of what a mediocre white man accomplishes. And, odds are, they still might not make it.”
I sure hope Pete listened good.
Yes.
Also - his saying that he’s never been called a MF’er before? This just reinforces concerns about his lack of experience.
Right? Because (as I imagine you know), given his record already as a mayor on race, he surely has been called that. He just hasn’t been listening.
Harriot’s wariness that Mayo Pete is just another white politician looking for black votes sure seems warranted.
If you haven’t been called that at least once you are doing some serious whitebread take no risks at all living.
Hell I am as pasty white as one can get and I have been called that more than I can bother to count.
Normally I don’t put a lot of stock in the idea of “precedent” for dirty politics. But in this case I think there are probably a large number of people who might have been put off by Bloomberg continuing to own Bloomberg News while running who will now say to themselves, “Trump keeps running his businesses, if that’s what it takes to win then Bloomberg should do it.”
Gotta defend Pete here that they said they’d never been called a “lying motherfucker” before. Pretty sure the former navy veteran and openly gay politician has been called a few nasty names to their face.
This is most likely true. I don’t despise Pete, but I do think we could do better. He has a lived experience that would do well in a higher office, but maybe not the Pres, at least not just yet. Governor, or cabinet position maybe?
Honestly I think Buttigieg is running for VP or Cabinet, and is eyeing presidency in 8-16 years (which would still make them a pretty young president).
I have to say that first Michael Harriot article definitely dropped my opinion of Buttigieg and the second Harriot article repaired that damage. Not that it made me think, “Yeah, I support Buttigieg now!” but I’m not catastrophizing about a Buttigieg win. (Honestly my softening on Mayor Pete is mostly thanks to George Takei’s endorsement which made me think more in terms of disagreements between well meaning people with different values instead of civil war; but I’m not American anyway so all of this is just, like, my opinion, man)
Mayor Pete’s not running as a bid for a Cabinet position only because there’s no Secretary of Smug Centrism.
Warren or Sanders or GTFO.
The winner of Democratic primaries, whoever that is (though I personally think Warren would be best for the USA and the world), or GTFO.
After the primary? Yes. Until then?
Warren or Sanders or GTFO.
