“The senior official who spoke with the BBC confirmed that each Russian unit had previously been commanded separately. Dvornikov will now unify the Russian forces under a central commander in Ukraine.

“That particular commander has a lot of experience of operations of Russian operations in Syria. So we would expect the overall command and control to improve,” the source told the BBC.

The appointment of Dvornikov, who has been described as the “Butcher of Syria” and one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s favorite generals, has also raised concerns that the war in Ukraine will turn bloodier.

Dvornikov gained notoriety in 2015 for ordering the bombings of Aleppo which killed thousands of people including 200 children, The Telegraph noted. He also helped develop Russia’s strategy for targeting civilian infrastructure like bakeries and hospitals.

The Institute for the Study of War, a thinktank based in Washington, D.C., said in a reportanalyzing the lessons learned by the Russian military in Syria that Dvornikov had previously said that demoralization and command inefficiency were pervasive in the Syrian Arab Army throughout that conflict.

After Syria, Russian military leaders including Dvornikov determined that Russia had “effectively coordinated precision strikes with tactical units in urban operations, using both aircraft and Kalibr cruise missiles in a close-support role,” according to the thinktank.“

I am not a military buff, but with all this help and the lack of russian logistics/strategy, could Ukraine turn the tide of the war?

New Russian war chief was appointed for a reason. He has a track record, and we can expect him to live up to it. He was known for targeting hospitals and other civil infrastructure.

Dvornikov, 60, came to prominence at the head of Russian troops in Syria in 2015-16, when there was particularly brutal bombardment of rebel-held areas, including civilian populations, in Aleppo.

Oops - I see @KathyPartdeux beat me to it a few posts above.

Is it to late for me to get some dosimeters for cheap? Because if this shit gets into circulation with further wrong hands, it will hit the fan. At some point. Somewhere.

I wrote before that I hoped that Chernobyl wouldn’t be booby-trapped and sabotaged when it would be under the control of Ukraine again. Before that, I hoped that the Russian army wouldn’t use Chernobyl to poison Kiev’s drinking water.

On both accounts, my hope so far seems to hold.

Now I can add that I hope the people who removed the radioactive material from the site will not distribute for use (or use it themselves) to build a dirty bomb, or other terrible things with it. Just throwing it away, uncontrolled, undocumented, would be terrible already.

Okay, update on the refugee situation in Tijuana…

The camp has been relocated from the border to a baseball field across the river. You can find it on Google Maps with the location “Unidad Deportiva Benito Juárez”. I spoke with a volunteer who is a Ukrainian, and he says everyone with a Ukraine passport is being accepted into the USA.
The camp has plenty of beds, showers, and food. The Mexican people are being very supportive in what ways they can.
There are shuttle buses transporting people to the border at a rate of 60 people per hour, and they enter another camp after processing on the USA side, where they meet with volunteers who try to match them with host families in the US.

So, with this information I kind of feel that the young person I would have hosted reeks of self-entitlement, and hope whoever takes her in can stand it.

On a side note, as I was at the border crossing, I came across some USians and asked them if they knew where the refugee camp had been relocated. One woman in the group piped up and said, “We don’t wish to discuss this subject.”

Asshole.

Perhaps, with the record of generals and high-ranking officers in this conflict, he won’t be on the job too long?
