Gergiev was in Italy when the war began. He could have condemned the war and stayed outside Russia. Instead Putin is rewarding his loyalty with a new job.

As you’ll learn from that thread, he funds his oligarch lifestyle with a charitable foundation that receives donations from state-owned Russian companies.

I was trying to figure out a way to work that into my comment, but couldn’t think of a way to make it fit.

I misread that as a lot of “widows” in Russia.

But then, maybe I didn’t misread it.

A Russian state television show this week got into a heated debate over the potential end of the world should Russia launch a nuclear strike against the United Kingdom.

“One missile and that’s it!” the lawmaker declared. “The British Isles are no more!”

This prompted the host to push back against such a plan.

“The UK also has nuclear weapons,” he pointed out. “No one will survive this war. When you propose the strike with a SARMAT [missile], do you understand that no one will survive? No one on the planet?”

“We’ll start with a blank slate,” the lawmaker replied, seemingly welcoming the prospect of a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland.

Just for the record: did you guys notice that Indonesia banned palm oil exports last week, effective as of tomorrow, Friday the 29th of April 2022, because of the war?

First, it was just refined olein - but reports yesterday indicated that crude palm oil is also on the list. While analysts say that they can’t do this for long, it will have massive consequences. Most likely, the collateral damage from this war will kill more people than the weapons.

This war fucks us up as humanity so thoroughly, I can’t even.

On a sidenote: CPR GmbH from Hannover, Germany, is reported to be insolvent due to the sanctions in relation to the war. It’s allegedly Europe’s largest manufacturer of condoms, making a quarter of it’s sales volume in Russia.

Interesting that two Russians on state television are talking about a nuclear attack on the UK, debating the pros and cons, e.g.

“The UK also has nuclear weapons”

And nobody says “NATO”.

Some of them do seem to be sociopaths that like killing for fun though:

(It’s pretty brutal so discretion is advised.)

Still no match for the brutality humans inflict on each other, though.

Of all the shitty 80’s trends, imminent threat of nuclear war was absolutely not on my bingo card. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
