2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1)

Raining fiery death upon Kyiv while the General Secretary of the United Nations was visiting is sure some kind of power move. Probably not the way to win over the hearts and minds of the global community though.

I graduated high school in '85, and this guy is almost as old as me I would assume. EVERYBODY knew that we were way past ā€œDuck and Coverā€ naivete back then.

Pretty sure the official Russian position vis-Ć -vis the ā€œglobal communityā€ is along the lines of ā€œfuck you, what are you going to do about it? No, I didnā€™t think so.ā€

Killing the Secretary General is still the kind of thing that would be likely to push the ā€œletā€™s just stay out of itā€ crowd into action though. Russia may have given up on making new friends but they still have finite resources to use against new enemies.

I think itā€™s now literally illegal in Russia to even express the opinion that Russia wouldnā€™t win any given international conflict up to and including Stacks On Russia (which they are basically being told it is right now anyway), and it seems fairly clear that people with critical thinking skills and long term consideration of consequences are not the ones aiming the missiles.

Iā€™m not entirely serious about them being happy to kill the Secretary General of the UN, but I donā€™t think Iā€™m entirely joking either.

A theory Iā€™ve seen is that losing to Ukraine would be too humiliating and defeat would be a bit more tolerable if Russia had been fighting all of NATO.

They probably think they had a successful campaign to get them out of NATO too. Hard to keep track of all the successes their allies abroad have had.

I think Iā€™ve posted the story here before, so I wonā€™t repeat it, but dolphins can be assholes. I was straight-up harassed by a pod of them while body surfing. The only possible explanation is that they were fucking with me on purpose (porpoise?). Still, I got away with a lot less than whatā€™s been done to them by humans, so thereā€™s that.

Speaking to reporter Simon Shuster,

Please tell me his middle name is something like ā€œAndy.ā€

If it prompted a repeat of the UN ā€œpolice actionā€ a la Korea then it would provide Russia with a better narrative for losing.

That was only possible because the USSR was boycotting the UN over non-recognition of the Peopleā€™s Republic of China.

Iā€™m sorry for his death. Interesting that weā€™ve smoothly transitioned away from the word ā€œmercenary.ā€ ā€œMilitary contractorā€ sounds like he was building bridges and roads or something.
