Back in college I remember doing an independent study of folktales from around the world. When I got to Russia, I was astonished by how virtually all their folk tale heros had traits praised that were the opposite of what most other societies had: the dull-witted third son prevailing over his older brothers in winning the hand of a maiden, the stupid blacksmith triumphing over the evil merchants and nobles by virtue of his ignorance and refusal to play their games, and many (though not all) similar tales which stuck in my mind. Not every fable was like that, but enough that it stood out in my mind. Mind you, that was at the height of the cold war, and many of the books I was using were translated by non-Soviet translators, so there may have been an editorial bias there.

Some math…

$0.9B / day = $328B / year.

2019 GDP of Russia: $1,687B

19.4% of GDP diverted to a war. And the price tag doesn’t include sanctions. All of it avoidable by not invading.
