2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1)

Meanwhile in Russia pundits discuss the next steps: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and chunks of Sweden and Poland. It is not all Russians, for sure, but it is not just Putin.

They certainly seem… confident…in their military might. It is reminiscent of the US generals like Curtis LeMay calling for full-blown war with China when the Korean War was just getting started. Only these are straight-up armchair generals.

To be fair, so is Putin. He’s just an armchair general with an actual army.

Meanwhile, I wonder if anything will come unglued in Syria during their absence?

Same thing is happening to Apple. Here’s a link to the WaPo article:

Amid this internal offensive, Putin also moved to bring foreign technology companies to heel. Moscow deployed new devices that let it degrade or even block Russians’ access to Facebook and Twitter, imposed fines totaling $120 million on firms accused of defying Kremlin censors, and ordered 13 of the world’s largest technology companies to keep employees in Russia and thus exposed to potential arrest or other punishment for their employers’ actions — a measure that U.S. executives refer to as the “hostage law.”

However, mercenaries from Syria will not affect the outcome of the war, mainly due to climactic reasons, he said.

Eh? Because it’s too cold in Ukraine for those fighters? Or because the war will reach a climax before there are enough to have an effect? No follow-up from the reporter.

ETA: Climactic and climatic are often confused, and without follow-up it’s not clear to me how this was used.
