2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

And what would “modernize” mean in any useful sense? Larger-bore main armament (t62 uses 115mm, t-72 is 125mm)? Greater horsepower with a new engine (T62 is 581hp, T-72 is 1130)? Upgrade to composite armor with explosive-reactive capability? How would they be able to do any of this?

The linked article says “night vision optics and additional armor.” Additional armor on a 581hp engine? Night vision optics is something that the Russian tanks don’t consistently have already.

Good luck, Boris.

ETA: The T62 doesn’t have an auto-loader, so it requires a 4-person crew, as opposed to the 3-person crews of the later tanks. So that’s an automatic 25% increase in personnel. Again, good luck.

And an automatic increase in the number of soldiers killed when the internal ammo rack cooks off and the turret pops off.

You gotta figure a job driving one of those is already a hard sell…

Which part was that: “:ukraine: never joins NATO”, the violent regime change, wholesale resource looting, extermination of the Ukrainian people… ? I lose track of what the goals are there. /s

They just need to get them running long enough to get them on a train, off a train and up to the front line where they’ll promptly explode.

They need to give them time to surrender though. Borscht-eating surrender monkeys.

(Maybe not a fair gif for this)

There were reports that reserve depots were sending tanks that didn’t run or had guns that didn’t work. As long as they could get enough tanks onto the trains, getting them working would be somebody else’s problem.

Money quotes:

“Though Musk has received widespread acclaim and thanks for responding to requests for Starlink service to Ukraine right as the war was starting, in reality, the vast majority of the 20,000 terminals have received full or partial funding from outside sources, including the US government, the UK and Poland, according to the SpaceX letter to the Pentagon.

SpaceX’s request that the US military foot the bill has rankled top brass at the Pentagon, with one senior defense official telling CNN that SpaceX has “the gall to look like heroes” while having others pay so much and now presenting them with a bill for tens of millions per month.

According to the SpaceX figures shared with the Pentagon, about 85% of the 20,000 terminals in Ukraine were paid – or partially paid – for by countries like the US and Poland or other entities. “

I’m guessing he’s not loosing money here. Military pricing etc.

What is the point of something like that? All this does is create target practice for modern anti-tank weapons and a death-trap for Russian conscripts

RPGs are sufficient against a T-62 but are only effective/accurate to about 200 meters. So you have to get much closer than you would with a Javelin to be sure

But since they’re cheap fire a few more if you miss, if the tank doesnt get you first.
