Any full-time student who’s surprised that this is happening can’t have been very bright to begin with.

I appreciate that insight, but this is someone who should be aware of having an international audience and how different words come across in different places.

Here is a back of a f/g packet calculation:

With the ‘a’ in place of my slash in the original. Why?

Cigarette packet.

I know what he meant, yes. I would imagine that most English-speaking folks would know what he meant. Even so. The word has a highly pejorative connotation in US English. And even though he didn’t mean it that way, it’s easy enough to avoid. Just as with the c-word and it’s different uses in different parts of the English-speaking world.

This is a fair criticism and one of the reasons we prohibit those words here on the BBS, even though some are incredibly common in some parts of the English-speaking world.

That being said, lamenting that a native speaker from these regions where these terms are frequently used on another platform is unlikely to be successful, but more so isn’t on-topic here, either.

I’m not surprised… this isn’t the first time they’ve performed in what was functionally a war zone - they did this concert on the date on the signing of the Dayton Accords:

Also… tell me you know nothing about Laibach without telling me you know nothing about Laibach…

an arch reference to the fact the Eurovision song contest, won by Ukraine in 2022, will not be hosted in the country this year, but rather Liverpool in the UK.

Why is that wrong? It’s what Laibach said.

In a statement announcing the concert, the band said: “While the rest of Europe prepares to celebrate its idea of freedom and solidarity on 9 May in Liverpool, Laibach is taking Eurovision back to Ukraine, where it belongs and where the only true and real vision of Europe is taking place right now.”

I took it as a reference to their song, actually.

But sure…

Putin’s patriotic concert and rally at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium today was an impressive event on camera. But off camera, it’s reported to have been poorly attended.

BBC TV News just showed footage of large numbers of people leaving the stadium before Putin’s speech (ended?)
