Russia to cut gas supplies to Finland on Saturday, says gas firm

Russia will stop gas flows to neighbouring Finland on Saturday morning, Finnish state-owned gas wholesaler Gasum said in a statement.

The company has refused to pay Gazprom Export in roubles as Russia has requested European countries to do.

The statement by Gasum read:

On the afternoon of Friday May 20, Gazprom Export informed Gasum that natural gas supplies to Finland under Gasum’s supply contract will be cut on Saturday 21 May at 04.00 (GMT).

The company will continue to supply gas to customers in Finland from other sources through the Balticconnector pipeline.

Gasum CEO, Mika Wiljanen, described the news as “regrettable” and sought to reassure customers that there would be enough gas in the coming months:

We have been carefully preparing for this situation and provided that there will be no disruptions in the gas transmission network, we will be able to supply all our customers with gas in the coming months.

This is speculative, but there’s surely a deal to be struck here somewhere.

Can the oligarchs finish their coup already? This level of stupid has got to annoy everyone inside and outside of Russia by now.

If they don’t, I wouldn’t put it past the Israeli special forces.

Just in case anyone here is not familiar, this is the guy whose son Boris put in the House of Lords. Despite security service fears clearly expressed in a briefing to No.10. Even some of his own MPs wanted to know about this.

Boris also escaped his security team while Foreign Secretary, to attend a houseparty in Italy hosted by the son, who runs the Evening Standard and Independent newspapers in the UK. He met with the father - an ex-KGB agent, and yes, the guy Canada just sanctioned - while at the party.

He has a track record of smoothing the way for the son.

I wonder why?

(No - I don’t - obviously. The details may be obscure but the rationale is corruptingly plain.)

“For us, the war in Ukraine … is a rehearsal for a possibly larger conflict in the future,” Fenenko said. “And that is why we’ll test and go up against NATO weapons, and will see on the battlefield how much stronger our weapons really are compared to theirs.”

“Maybe it will be a learning experience for a future conflict,” he continued.

The article is one-sided, but still worth the read. Discussion in Germany is much more complex, and sometimes nuanced. Nevertheless, German government is quite in trouble to explain its rationales to it’s critics. They are so far not very successful.
