Looks like Russia may be planning a false flag attack on the plant in order to shut it down completely.
Apparently, the plant (still?) generates 20% of Ukraineā€™s electricity. Iā€™ll never understand why Russia always needs to create a crisis in order to do something that they could already do anyway without all the extra steps.

In case anyone does not have time to click through and read the story, below is a key qualifying paragraph. Itā€™s not just China and itā€™s a regular event. But Putin will squeeze every drop of propaganda out of it and those other countries are willing contributors to that.

The joint exercises in Russiaā€™s far east, which will include India, Belarus, Mongolia, Tajikistan and other countries, are held every four years. But the week-long manoeuvres will be presented by Russia as a symbol of international support despite sanctions and other efforts to isolate the country due to its war with Ukraine.

Although it is intriguing to think that Russia has enough spare military to go and play in these exercises. It would be a bit embarrassing if all the others turned up and nobody from Russia was there.

"Oh, they left a note: ā€˜gone to Ukraine, back in a short whileā€™ "

Total alcohol consumption in Finland peaked in 2005, when 12.1 litres of alcohol were consumed per head of population above the age of 15

That number looked really low initially, but I guess thats just the pure alcohol within the drinks. So for 5% ABV beers that would be equivalent to ~240 litres of beer, or about 720 beers per year (around two beers per day).

A drop wonā€™t kill you, and you wonā€™t drown in a bucketful
Since we have already started, letā€™s just continue

Finns are binge drinkers.

I did quite a bit of work in Finland a few years back. When we wrapped up the project we were treated to sauna, dinner and drinks. We were told that at least one person was expected to get blackout drunk, so we drew lots to determine who the designated drunk would be. Thankfully not me, but we didnt see our teammate again for two days.

One of my favorite breweries is Plevna in Tampere.

Uh, I donā€™t know how to react to this.

Was it meant to be a funny gag because you were an outsider?

I mean, is there really a culture where one person has to basically poison themselves with alcohol as part of a normal group evening?

What if someone is an alcoholic staying sober, or has medical reasons to not drink?

Maybe it was a bunch of young adults playing around?

Really, Iā€™m just flabbergasted that this would be considered ā€˜normalā€™ anywhere.

I had the same initial reaction, tbh. Iā€™ve taken part in some ritualized work-related drinking in China, where it gets excessive but where one is also not supposed to outdrink the host. ā€œOne person getting blackout drunkā€ is a mystery to me, as well.

I was one of the youngest in the group at 35 at the time. Our hosts ranged from early 30s to early 60s, and @anon33932455 I dont think we were in any danger of out-drinking our hosts. This was a celebration of completion of a major project, not a typical night out, and Iā€™m pretty certain it wasnā€™t being treated as a gag based on our hostā€™s consumption.

Looking back on it, do you feel any differently about the behavior? It just seems so extreme to me, and dangerous.
