Lukashenko is a lot of things, but completely stupid isn’t one of them. This way he gets to show off to Putin while, at the same time, knowingly lining up the equipment for immediate destruction by short-range weapons. He’s not going to fight, and is letting 
and NATO know it.

I suspect the Russian commanders are shitting their pants right now, as the Ukrainian army may be talking about a buffer zone but the possibility of being kettled in now looms over them. Not from Kursk, mind, but the advances into Russia will raise the spectre of Ukrainian special forces moving freely behind their lines and cutting off supplies.
Also worth comparing and contrasting is how Ukraine is following the Geneva conventions when it comes to handling prisoners of war, or at least making a big show of it to visiting journalists (no link, this is based on something I saw last night on German television). By broadcasting how humane the prisoners are being handled, it makes surrendering more attractive, helps overcome the shame of surrender many stated on camera, especially when contrasted with the beatings and neglect they received from their own commanders.
