Now before the reflex snark about me being white and male and needing to check my privilege, think on this. I have plenty of privilege now —and that’s how I have the ability to post. It wasn’t always thus — I’m a lucky social climber from poor white trash and had sweet FA chances until I discovered a free public library.

Okay, but as you sort of just admitted, your being white and male made that climb easier. Is that so hard to acknowledge?

Now I find my demographic of origin is doubly disenfranchised because they don’t have a voice in these kind of discussions and because anyone who comes out of that group who is able to speak up is disregarded because (how ironic) of their gender, colour and ability to pass as middle class.

No, they’re not disregarded just because of who and what they are – what they often say is often disregarded.

Plenty of white men make good and appreciated contributions to various battles for equality. They’re the ones who are not disregarded, because they have useful things to say, and they usually manage to say useful things because they’ve also managed to acquire some accurate self-awareness.

(How’s that for a lack of “reflexive snark”?)
