I guess those centuries of brutal murders by Christians were just unfortunate accidents then? That will make the millions of dead indigenous people feel much better.
That would be a huge surprise to the many Christians who oppose fascism. Again, don’t let the right wing colonize everything.
Such as…
For a start. Anything can be employed for oppression.
As of now, he’s not been charged with any federal crimes to my knowledge, just six (I think) state charges in Wisconsin. He’s sitting in an Illinois jail awaiting an extradition hearing later in the month.
All pay heed! Now enters his holiness Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition!
Torquemada; do not employ him for compassion
Torquemada; do not beg him for forgiveness
Torquemada; do not ask him for mercy
Let’s face it, you can’t Torquemada anything!
So that attorney is making the argument that his client committed treason against the lawful government of the country at the time? [It seems to me that people like George Washington was considered a traitor by the British government.]
As an aside, who if anybody has the trademark for “Christian” in the United States? Seems like a cease and desist against this crowdfunding site (for damaging the reputation of the mark) might be in order if the owners of the trademark aren’t followers of Jesus “Rambo” Christ.
Take literally everything about this story except change the kid to have brown skin and/or being a devout Muslim.
I have a feeling they would be singing a different tune.
A
ChristianXtianist crowdfunding site
Fixed. Call these far-right religious fundie ideologues what they are.
Somehow I don’t picture any of these defenses ending up in writing in a formal answer. Like all right wingnut welfare lawyers (Mat Staver, Larry Klayman, Alliance Defending Freedom…) they are more concerned with fundraising off their clients and pocketing contributions than actual legal arguments in the interests of their clients. The kid is better off with a public defender at this point.
I doubt any of those groups would be very surprised to hear about the strong association of christianity and authoritarianism/ fascism. It been there for ~1700 years.
My feeling is a lawyer displaying the most lawyerishness would get all this out there, really ham it up with the far-right stuff, then once in court blame the police shamelessly.
THEY let him walk around with the gun, THEY expressed appreciation, THEY supplied refreshments. They let a 17 year-old kid with an assault rifle get into the position to panic and “self-defend” in the first place, when they should have taken his gun and hauled his ass to jail on sight.
I predict this is how it will go, and I doubt he will spend any time in jail after the trial, at all.
Matthew 7:12 (TRUMP Branded Luxury Fascism Version):
“So in everything, do to others first what you fear they could do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
My point is that they are Christians, too, and that what it means to be a Christian has always been contested in the modern era. Again, we let the right control the narrative at OUR peril. Rejecting alliances with Christians who embrace leftist causes simply because they are Christians and so they must be right wing authoritarian bigots does a disservice to the cause of justice. It’s already an uphill battle, so we should work to make alliances where and when we can.
That would make for a great subsequent civil suit from the surviving victim and the family of the deceased, but it isn’t a defense to the charges.
Any prosecutor and judge would shut down the whole line of questioning as irrelevant. Since it does not have any bearing on kid’s acts or his intentions
Well, there’s 8,987 people who will not be getting into the Heaven they believe in.
I am as bad with lumping all Christians together as anyone, worse than most really, but I do deeply admire the Quakers. It’s easy for the rage to get out of hand.
Suprise!
I don’t even consider most Christians Christians!
In fact I’m beginning to doubt they even exist
It seems like there’s a lot of people who claim to believe in Jesus but don’t do anything good for Humanity. they use Jesus like ammunition in a revolver called religion and they think that shooting things solves problems
You seem to be putting words in my mouth. When did I say we should ‘[reject] alliances with Christians who embrace leftist causes simply because they are Christians and so they must be right wing authoritarian bigots’?
I merely pointed out the very long history of christian authoritarianism in the world and that no left leaning christian group should be surprised by it.
How does that make them unchristian?
