I was just looking at a plug-in hybrid SUV (with AWD, even!) that has a 60-mile electric range, and couldn’t help wonder how long it would be before pickups are plug-ins, too. You can still have the super-duty gas engine for extra power when you really need it, but there’s not much reason you need that much power for just toolin’ around town.
EXACTLY. And as demand increases, the manufacturers will figure out how to make them available.
Plus, it’s like 20 years away, he has a fairly new truck, and he’s in his 70s.
It’s just pure stubbornness on his part. Especially since there’s no way this would have gone through without convincing a lot of people that it makes sense, not just the environmentalists.
Nice. I just wish everyone would realize that the vast majority of us don’t even need that SUV or pickup. Or even if you really want one what the heck happened to the ones that were basically medium sized cars with a flatbed which would probably be more than enough for 95% of those that want one. But nooo gotta go BIG BIG BIG for some stupid reason.
Gotta compensate for the micropenis in their head. Be it with guns, God, or big trucks.
I would love a little pick-up like Datsun/Nissan and Toyota used to make.
Room for two people (three if you really, really squeeze and everybody is small) but truck enough when you needed the cargo space. Fuel efficient (so could easily be made with an electric or plug-in hybrid engine).
BRING BACK THE TINY TRUCKS!
ETA: I miss my Chevy Tracker. The tiny squarish, convertible one, not the late model bigger thing.
I just looked that up and went oh god I want that so bad. I don’t need one but that is a pretty cool vehicle.
I was lamenting how few cars, as in sedans, are currently available.* I can admit to being tired of not being able to drive around in more than 4" of snow, but that’s why I was looking at AWD, the SUV part was somewhat coincidental.
*The stupid Prius is 10, got crashed into a couple weeks ago by a moron who didn’t look before changing lanes, and is pretty much falling apart. I probably won’t buy a car for several more years (in order to fulfill my promise to the world that I will drive stupid Prius into the ground), but I was feeling the need to look at new cars the week after the crash.
Just get a tesla model X
/my boss’s boss who doesn’t understand that $100k for a car is vastly out of reach for someone making $16/hr
ALL HAIL TRUCKLA!
It was a blast to drive.
Unfortunately, it got cheaper to buy a new car than fix that one.
I am very aware that I am in a privileged position, but we have a very high efficiency car for daily driving, and still have a full size pickup for the farm. Only gets a few hundred miles per year, but there are times that a prime mover is not optional. As a daily driver, though?
[Mr. Kidd was pulling out if a dealership lot in a brand new GIANT pickup truck at approximately the same moment stupid Prius was getting crashed into. I didn’t know he was buying a truck that day. Added greatly to my malaise re: stupid car. Have I mentioned that my particular car is The Worst Built Toyota of All Time? Yeah.]
The company that makes that awesome slide is called Whooshh Innovations.
Yes it is.
My dad had a lot of rural land, so he had two off-road trucks to cart things around. One was diesel and one was electric. Guess which one was SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful? Yup.
Show him Rivian:
Forget him, I’d buy one.
We all know the reason. It is the same reason programmers sometimes wear construction worker boots to the office.
My car is small and efficient, but I have a couple pairs of big boots myself.
