Bleh! American Media Inc is owned by Chatham Asset Management, which also owns Canadian chain Postmedia (kind of breaking a few Canadian laws in the process) which owns quite a few newspapers.

In the past year, theyā€™ve instituted a heavy-handed chain editorial policy straight out of Koch Bro Trumpistan. (So, no change at the Toronto Sun.)

opinion is pretty direct:

Instead, this Court concurs with the thrust of Miersā€™s conclusion that, whatever the scope of the Presidentā€™s executive privilege with respect to the information that Congress seeks to compel, and whatever the merits of DOJā€™s assertion that senior-level aides are the Presidentā€™s ā€œalter egosā€ for the purpose of invoking an immunity, DOJ has failed to bridge the yawning gap between a presidential aideā€™s right to withhold privileged information in the context of his or her compelled congressional testimony (which no one disputes), and the Presidentā€™s purported power to direct such aides to refuse to show up and be questioned at all (which appears only in a string of OLC opinions that do not themselves constitute legal precedents and are manifestly inconsistent with the constitutional jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and the D.C. Circuit in many respects).

Looks like the Supremeā€™s will review.

Itā€™s nice to see all this coming out, but I canā€™t shake the feeling that even if every other member of Trumpā€™s inner circle ends up testifying against him and/or going to prison heā€™s still not going to be held to account by his fellow Republicans.

In our current environment, your feeling is spot on. We are watching the devolution of the Republican party into a classic cult of personality. The only question is how much of the country will follow that cult, and for how long.

Love this song.

Except for the guitar solo. Even the outfits are better than the guitar solo.

i canā€™t think of anywhere else to put this so iā€™m putting it here.

this afternoon i had a conversation with an acquaintance from my former workplace. she tends to lean republican, but expressed a strong dislike for the tenor of the party since the tea-party takeover. during the 2016 election she claimed to have voted for gary johnson.

we talked for a bit about the ukraine situation and the impeachment hearings. she didnā€™t think it was going to go anywhere. i admitted as much, since the republican majority senate was unlikely to vote for conviction. but she said that wasnā€™t that important, that it just seems to be falling into the pattern of presidential scandals. when i asked what she meant she said basically that with all the scandals and corruption the legislative investigating committees uncovered on obama they never impeached him and then with all the different things the democrats have accused trump of and now theyā€™re doing an impeachment on this thing it probably wonā€™t go anywhere either.

i waited for her to finish and then asked what she was talking about with the obama scandals and corruption. she got a little patronizing as if to say, ā€œOK, democrat, donā€™t play dumbā€ and mentioned solyndra, fast and furious, obamaā€™s association with bill ayers, the attack by obamaā€™s irs on conservative groups, the whole beghazi scandal, and that awful racist woman shirley sherrod. with all that and no impeachment, she thought that most people are just going to assume that scandals surrounding the presidency are an unfortunate fact of life. obama didnā€™t face any consequences for his corruption and trump probably wonā€™t either.

i had to shake my head and admire how effective the fox epistemic bubble has been.

edited for spelling.

'muricans love war criminals?

I just canā€™t wrap my head around this one. I canā€™t.

Does trump think that he looks better if standing next to a war criminal?

thereā€™s an article over at the atlantic-- https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/11/republicans-embrace-nihilism/602554/
the teaser quote is about how
ā€œthe senate trial will force voters to evaluate nihilism as the governing philosophy of a political movement.ā€

this isnā€™t he first article iā€™ve seen the centrist and liberal press about how the republican party is going to face a reckoning in a senate trial over impeachment but i, sadly, have to say theyā€™ve got it wrong. the republicans are not going to reckon with any such thing because they see trump as a staunch corruption fighter being dragged down buy the criminal conspiracies of the democrats. they hear that every day on fox news, they hear it every time rush limbaugh opens his mouth.
