A parrot steals a GoPro, and then gives us this gorgeous footage of New Zealand's remote Fiordland

Yup. If parrots can crack open nuts like it’s nobody’s business, then go-pros don’t stand a chance.

Fiordland
Good name for a band

ABBA covers?

It seems that the “thief” is eating something that comes off from the camera. So I guess the YouTuber staged the theft by applying something edible over the camera. The parrot got fed so I guess it’s a good type of staging.

Kea’s are famous for destroying hikers boots.

No staging needed, the highly intelligent Kea are internationally notorious for their antics - especially how much they love to dismantle tourists cars…

I am guessing the GoPro has a tracker tag. I am guessing this is what the kea was trying to get off.

And if it weren’t for that meddling kid, he would have gotten away with it…

This sort of thing absolutely happens without food rewards. I’ve been around keas, and they are - as @euansmith noted above - the goats of the air. They chew anything; worse than husky pups. Bike tires, car plastic fittings, window trim, you name it. Smart, curious, and with strong beaks is a bad combination in a nearby bird if you don’t want your stuff broken.

They’re also a protected species, and have less fear of humans than cats.

That happens with wild keas in NZ:

That’s an ankle tracker to check if it’s sticking to the terms of its parole (and not, you know, stealing stuff).

Nope. That’s what kea do. Wee vandals.

They REALLY LIKE car windscreen wipers. Hey look mates, I can pull this away from the window and it thwaps back with a loud noise! Let’s do it again!
[Me, trying to sleep in the back seat: Fuggorff!!]

People familiar with area worked out the flightpath, and it turns out that Birb dropped the GoPro near the track and took to the trees with its mates, so someone sprinting along in pursuit would find it pretty quickly.

I shouldn’t just say Birb. Birb has a name!

By weird coincidence, EPOD just posted this about the Pancake Rocks, which look very similar to the (very briefly seen) rocks at 1:22 in the parrot vid.
