I would slightly prefer him to stay in. If all the non fascist Republicans leave, then all the remaining Republicans will be fascist.
The Republican party won’t die out, because a sizable portion of the country actually is that extreme. I’d rather have a political party that keeps that extremism in check.

I would love all the nonfascist republicans to leave, if i had any faith that the numbers would be at all significant. If they became an irrelevant, overtly racist, domininist, homophobic third party I would be ok. Right now, just seeing one serving Republican leave maybe perhaps breaks the dam? Maybe?

Not really. He’s very a hard right conservative - it just so happens that he is anti-Trump. He’s no friend to us and he’ll still caucus with R’s on most things. I see this as little more than a publicity ploy for a presidential run in 2020 which may actually make things worse for us.

It’s a way of opting out of the Republican primary, which will be full of Trumpers looking to take him out regardless, but in any case it moves the main contest to the general election and potentially prolongs his career by a few months.

This is an important distinction. We tried the “just ignore them” approach, and that clearly didn’t work. Squeezing them out is the only option. Make the social costs high.
