My first thought was Shirley Chisholm, because she was involved with the people I knew in the Republican party working for women’s rights in the 70’s so I forgot she wasn’t actually a Republican!

Running as a Republican in Utah is like running as a Democrat in Chicago: you might as well, no matter your views, because the other party doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell of being elected.
She might well be more moderate/progressive than many current Democrats. I don’t know. I just know that the two parties aren’t really representing what they say they’re representing, so it’s worth it to look at the individuals.

However, she was the first black female major- party presidential candidate, in 1972.
