A short, squat, useless Robocop comes to NYC

It’s definitely going to take an involuntary trip down the stairs.

It’s about half as useful as an unaccompanied K9 unit?

This robot may be cheaper than a cop, but probably better to spend the money on social or mental health assistance.

In other words, you will not get assistance.

Unless the robot can go places that have poor camera coverage (in which case, wouldn’t it be cheaper to just add more cameras?), the only actual use would be to remind people they’re under surveillance. This itself has a demonstrated impact on how people behave. Problem is, tossing up some posters would do the same job, or if you needed a mobile reminder, a blow-up doll taped to a Roomba could have a similar effect.

This is part of the “defunding” that’s necessary.

FTA:

So it will do away with the need for a suspect, and throw itself down the stairs.

I’m kinda surprised that the company that makes these is still around. They’ve been s
leasing out this same model of robot since about 2016 and most clients haven’t been terribly impressed. The company was reporting financial problems to investors a couple of years ago but somehow they’re still in business.

It looks like they are still losing money; and they purchased a much more conventional call box outfit in 2022; which suggests that all is not entirely well with their super cool guard-labor-without-the-labor robots; though no details. It would be interesting to know(though they’d probably be loathe to admit) whether the CASE buy, of a company that makes what are effectively just ruggedized cellphones with limited dialing options, very conservative compared to robots, was purely about trying to bring in a bunch of established customers to upsell on the robots; or if it’s an attempt to use the robot hype money to buy someone who actually makes a product people want before they burn through it all.

If anyone feels bad for them; they’ll take your money to pay themselves to put their robots in schools that can’t afford security theater; so there’s that.

What is the point of this if a cat cannot sit on top and be carried around?
