ABC cancels 'Roseanne' because Roseanne Barr is a racist

How could Disney possibly have seen this coming?

This is the best joke she’s been associated with in ages.

Buh-bye, kapo.

[ETA: her agency, ICM, also dropped her]

She’s just going to go back to the wealthy liberal enclave in Hawaii where she makes her home (I’m sure her neighbours will be thrilled). Roseanne hasn’t lived in Real America™ for decades, even though she panders to its nastiest impulses.

ETA:

A lot of this comes down to the nature of her act, into which she puts a lot of her real self. The message is: “I’m gonna be brutally honest and speak my truth about stuff no-one else will talk about because I’m an outspoken working-class woman who won’t be silenced.” Which might have been funny when she was talking about how awful life in blue-collar Real America™ was but doesn’t work so well when she’s talking about about paedophile conspiracies or her opinion that black people look like apes or about evil Jewish masterminds.

If her style of comedy was semi-performance art like Andy Kaufman’s or Norm MacDonald’s I’d be giving her the benefit of the doubt, but it’s not. For example, MacDonald is a thoughtful comedian’s comedian who specialises in messing with people. He sometimes plays it mean, but if it’s truly a punching-down joke or one based in stereotypes it’s always partially at his own expense. When he goes after other comedians, celebrities, or powerful people, though, he’s brutal and unapologetic and extremely funny (at least if you’re into his style, which is not for everyone).

It can’t be explained away by bad taste, either. Mel Brooks, one of the masters who created the fictional musical “Springtime for Hitler” for “The Producers” doesn’t seriously believe in conspiracy theories about Jewish puppetmasters. He mocks idiots like that. His opinion regarding the current regime is also very different from Barr’s:

“Trump doesn’t scare me,” he says. "He’s a song-and-dance man. Pence and Bannon, those guys make me nervous."He adds: “We are not talking about Athenian democracy here.”

“Roseanne” picked up by the NRA network in 5, 4, 3, 2,…

I originally thought her Trumpism was just a calculated ploy to reach out to that demographic and get them engaged with the show. Now I think her Tumpism is genuine and she believes in what she says.

She seemed to be trying with the islamophobia episode.

She can always fall back on her other career.

Assuming she can pass a background check and not harass the customers.

Good on Disney. I’m pretty sure they were most unhappy with the catch-22 they were in - best show for their network in forever, but filled with potential political hot potatoes.

As an aside, this is actually why I’ve avoided going to Sci-Fi conventions - I don’t want to find out that the actors behind my favourite characters might actually be asshats. I guess Twitter solves that, eh?

OTOH - James Doohan was a real sweetie when I met him briefly.

I would estimate that probability to be very close to 1.

Possibly the best description I’ve ever seen for Twitter is “a great way to find out that you actually hate the people you thought you loved.”

Disney aren’t going to be able to Macgyver a fix for this one…

How many people need to express racism and get slammed for it before they realize that being full of hate can turn on you like a viper and your own poison kills you. There is an anti-venom…love your neighbor as yourself.
And if you hate yourself ask a neighbor for help.

This is sad as hell to me. Not because something bad happened to that idiot Barr, but because I really want to be wrong about a lot of my broad brush beliefs about Trump supporters. A big part of me wants to be wake up one day and find a bunch of them that really did vote for him out of some sense of economic anxiety and not because he was willing to pander to their worst aspects as human beings. But folks like Barr want to prove my first instinct right, and that’s just depressing.

Time out? Perhaps it’s time to stop listening to her at all… ever again.

I knew Doohan was okay when I found out he hated Shatner’s guts.

  1. Blisteringly fast by corporate standards.
  2. How the hell did they not see this coming? This was quite possibly the most likely thing to ever happen.

We are talking about people here? So many many - get typically don’t learn easily (smoking, eating poorly, etc). Despite all evidence they know what they think is true is always true.

Maybe the reason it happened so fast is that they DID see it coming and had the abort procedure set up ahead of time.
