After anti-LBGTQ+ parents had a school play canceled, students raised $75k to put it on anyways

No problem, then just shove them off the bridge

Their views were neither respectful nor could be reasonably explained. One doesn’t seek bridges with bigots. One excludes them from consideration and moves on.

Something very similar happened in 2008 where I live in a 'burb of Portland, Oregon. A middle-school teacher had written a play about bullying.

The central character in “Higher Ground” is a boy who gets teased and harassed after he shrugs off a misunderstanding about whether he’s straight or gay. Other characters in the play are bullied because they are overweight, Latina, in special education, tagged as “Goth,” a high achiever or have a dad in prison.

After a few parents complained, the principal insisted on rewrites just two days before opening night. The student voted not to bad the play but were ignored. The play never appeared in the school, it was presented at a real theater in Portland instead. The uproar was briefly part of the national news cycle.
