In the past his creditors have always actively helped him maintain the outward illusion of being rich and successful under the theory that it’s easier to get money out of a guy whose brand has enough value to attract other investors than it is to get money out of a flat-broke pariah that no other lender would touch with a ten-foot pole.
It’s kind of like a big Ponzi scheme where everyone who was dumb enough to invest in the first place has a financial motive to help it continue even after they know it’s a scam.
