I wonder which Chippies Bill Bryson went to? Why didn’t he get a chicken tikka kebab in a naan, or one of the other culinary delights available at a decent chip shop? I guess he should count himself lucky that he didn’t go to a Black Country chip shop and sample “Grey Peas and Chips”.

We don’t use that terminology here, and I don’t fresh water fish so it’s not really my area of expertise. Fishing of all sorts has that working class/rural association here. But it isn’t what I see when I head down to the docks these days.
Part of what I was getting at is what is meant by “working class” varies quite a bit with time and location. The “working class” white guy near me is not the working class immigrant with 4 jobs busting ass in the Bronx. And the well paid union factory worker of the 70’s is not the bombed out wreck of an industrial town that replaced him.
But socially I do know that the UK has upper crusty angling clubs dating to the 19th century, part of that whole country gentleman thing.
My uncle in Waterford is in a similar sort of Irish club and is frequently invited to speak at and fish with much older UK groups. It sounds very weird. His club is more of a general sort of old man enthusiast group at this point. But some of the UK groups he’s interacted with are all titled gentry, don’t allow women weirdness.
The stereotype of freshwater fishing here is hillbillies in bass boats. The reality is that bass boat is proportionally much more expensive than most comparable boats. And the hillbilly probably makes more than you do.
Weirdly fly-fishing has traditionally been less popular here. But also long had a much different reputation. Being a sort of classy, European, fashionable fishing for the educated and well off. Recently it’s gotten very popular, particularly salt water fly fishing. That tweed jackets and advance degrees image has started to fade as a result.

Out of curiosity, in Frasier, which accent would be considered fancier: Frasier’s (and Niles’), or Daphne’s?
(There’s a scene where Martin mockingly impersonates Daphne’s accent which is particularly brilliant because it’s not actually Jane Leeves’s native accent but it is John Mahoney’s.)
