Since the end (or maybe just “pause”?) of the cold war Albanians have really emerged as the stock villains, replacing the role that Russians and East Germans used to hold in a lot of our popular media. I have no doubt that a lot of that is due to real issues with corruption and organized crime, but I wonder how much of it is just the fact that many Americans don’t know much about that country and they have a somewhat evil-looking flag?

Given that Hunter and his father were only ever being accused of doing the things the Trump family did right out in the open, the Hunter jokes started off more as resigned shrugs than anything.

I mean…
It’s kind of gorgeous there… All of the Balkans are beautiful… tourism is big business there.
Also, I don’t know that Albania has any more or less crime than anywhere else these days…
